Strategy and Tactics - Defeating AoE

RPGs and tank shells can utterly devastate infantry. In fact, a single well-placed shot can wipe out an entire squad in some circumstances. Use the following recommendations to maximize your survival rate.

  • Do not allow even a marginal line of site from AoE weapons. If they can't see you, they can't kill you. As soon as you are spotted however, you endanger your other troops to "splash damage".
  • Know your ranges. For example, if you are fighting a short range RPGs such as the PLA's PF-89, which tops out at 20", keep it at bay and engage it at long range with your SAW units.
  • Stretch your command radius to the max. Many players are afraid of getting out of command and keep troops clustered to avoid getting caught out of range of their commander. Spread out to avoid being caught in the blast radius. If possible, split into fire teams to allow yourself to spread out even further
  • When rolling attacks the highest roll gets applied to the nearest enemy. By their design RPGs and armor weapons typically start with a D10 over the standard D6 for damage and many have a "+" modifier as well. This makes them the most likely weapon to hit the nearest enemy. Take advantage of that by always leaving one mini 2" in front of the rest of your squad. Most AoE weapons have a blast radius of 1-2", keeping everyone else outside that perimeter will minimize splash damage.
  • Split into fire teams and flank heavy weapons to avoid a deadly frontal assault. When you move to engage, engage them quickly by using a double move.
  • Focus on suppressing enemy RPGs as much as possible. If you have two enemy squads, focus on the one that presents the greatest threat and pour as much firepower on it as possible.
  • Put your armor at risk. Most tanks can absorb multiple failed armor rolls. Risk one or two and use your tank for cover or simply as a distraction to allow your infantry to close and kill. Many times the desire to fire on the tank will lead over anxious players to unnecessarily expose their troops to deadly fire from your reaction shot.
