Strategy and Tactics - General Tips
- Concentrate firepower. An enemy only gets a single reaction per turn. Which means if you fire on it 3 times it only gets to shoot back at one of the 3 attackers.
- Kill it till it's dead (aka "Prophet's Principle #1"). While it may seem easy to ignore wounded infantry squads, you are often better off wiping them completely out. Deny them any flexibility or chance at rogue shots. Or suppress them at least once while you do something else.
- While dishonorable in some cultures, target the officers and commanders first. There is an old saying that if you strike the shepherd, the sheep will be scattered. In BF:Evo a unit loses it's next two actions and can only react when the unit leader is killed. Don't worry about killing them all, move your units and line up your firing arcs to maximize your chances of hitting an enemy commander over normal grunts, you'll gain a free turn to slaughter the sheep next round.
- SAWs typically have longer ranges than standard weapons. Use that to your advantage and keep SAW units in the back to avoid getting hit on return fire.
- Learn the art of feinting. No, not passing out in the middle of the game... distracting your opponent. Present a semi-juicy target to an enemy and get them hooked, lead them aside or pull back to lure them in and then pounce with the rest of your units.
- Maximize your command circle by fanning out, especially if you have a 12" circle. This will allow you to minimize the number of models in an enemies' fire zone.
- SAW style weapons are difficult to use at times due to the need to "Ready" them. Make sure you account for them. Double move at the start of the game. In round 2, ready the unit, then shoot.
- Suppress an enemy before you charge them or target units that have already reacted when you charge. They will only be able to move and not shoot you at point blank range. If the unit leader is dead, utterly shatter their morale by engaging in close combat.
- Don't assume AoE weapons have to target vees. If there is a mixed fire zone of infantry/vees, keep your enemy's shatter point in mind, it may be better to target the infantry.
- Keeping infantry in large squads makes it easier to avoid the effects of suppression. But when you are suppressed you lose the ability to fire from all troops. Splitting into fire teams makes you easier to suppress, but will typically only let the enemy suppress a portion of you troops. While you gain mobility, smaller fire teams also have a harder time suppressing enemy units. Figure out what works best for you.
- (munchkin warning) One of the best ways to avoid suppression is to split into fire teams, but then treat teams from separate units as a single squad. Why? Because if you intermingle your units in a staggered format you have double the troops to absorb dice from enemy fire which makes it easier to avoid suppression. In this example, when fire is applied you have to hit 7 targets before being able to suppress the fire team instead of just 4:
